Whyte Museum Book Shop

Manager

Hello everyone!

2021 has been a year of change here at the Whyte Museum Shop. We have officially changed the name to the, Whyte Museum Book Shop, in an effort to better articulate our shop's direction. As I look back over this past year, I realize we have achieved more than I originally thought. Despite business interruptions from COVID, all of us here in the shop have helped with transitioning the shop into a more comprehensive bookshop. Longtime employees Junko Yokura and Jacqueline Dolan have helped shape the new direction of content with input from part time Sales Associates, Manqi Sun and Morgan Sibbitt, who joined our team this past summer. I consider myself lucky to have these great employees and I look forward to working with them all in the new year. Since our reopening back in July, customers have responded very positively to the changes we made; nevertheless, moving towards a more complete bookshop is still a work in progress and you will see more changes take shape over the course of the next year.

Over the past several months, we have collaborated with the Alberta Publishers Association, Alberta Reads, and the Canadian Independent Book Sellers Association. In 2022, we will serve up new content from a wider variety of Alberta authors and publishers. A positive thing arising from the pandemic situation is that so many people are turning to creative writing and as a result we are seeing many new first time writers entering into the publishing world. New immigrants are telling their own stories - offering those of us who were born and raised here in Canada a better understanding of the Canadian immigrant experience; plus, the volume of Indigenous content from an array of new talent has increased dramatically. We now carry a curated selection of Canadian award winning fiction titles, publications from the Banff Mountain Book Festival Competition, and we will continue to offer in depth material for both adults and children on our local environment, nature, culture, history, travel, art and photography - supported by stationery products, games, puzzles and unique Whyte Museum inspired products.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers, members and vendors for all their support over the past year. I wish you all a happy and safe holiday and all of us here at the Whyte Museum Book Shop look forward to seeing you in the New Year!
