Over a cold but relaxing winter break, I was graced with lots of down time. Days filled with getting outside, followed by some calm evenings catching up on the new books I'd collected over the past couple weeks. One of my favorite reads from the past couple weeks would be Astra by Cedar Bowers.
Astra was on the 2021 Scotiabank Giller Prize Longlist. When I was initially looking at this list, Astra immediately caught my eye. It didn't remind me of any book I had read before. The premise of following someone's life from the time they met throughout their lives intrigued me. No person has just one side to them and not everyone looks at a person the same way as the next. Bowers explores this idea in a captivating way in the landscape of British Columbia. Whether this premise shows Astra for better or for worse, it definitely frames her in a compelling way.
Bowers is a Canadian author reining from Galiano Island in British Columbia, I am looking forward greatly to seeing more of her work down the line.
